GLEAM Survey Data

Radio sky above the MWA

A ‘radio colour’ view of the sky above a ‘tile’ of the Murchison Widefield Array radio telescope, located in outback Western Australia. The Milky Way is visible as a band across the sky and the dots beyond are some of the 300,000 galaxies observed by the telescope for the GLEAM survey. Hidden Galaxies

An image showing the location of the galaxies discovered in the ‘Zone of Avoidance’. Until now this region of space has remained hidden from view because of the gas and dust of the Milky Way which blocks light at optical wavelengths from reaching telescopes on Earth. Credit: ICRAR.

HI4PI

This HI4PI map was produced using data from the 100 metre Max-Planck radio telescope in Effelsberg, Germany and the 64 metre CSIRO radio telescope in Parkes, Australia. The image colours reflect gas at differing velocities. The plane of the Milky Way runs horizontally across the middle of the image. The Magellanic Clouds can be seen at the lower right. HI4PI

An image showing the HI 21-cm line emission of neutral atomic hydrogen of the Milky Way galaxy and the neighbouring galaxies, like the Andromeda galaxy and the Magellanic Clouds, both visible in the lower half of the panel. Galaxy surveys

The distribution of galaxies as mapped by various Australian, US and European survey teams, as well as the planned regions covered by upcoming galaxy surveys. In total we have mapped the locations of over 4 million galaxies that can be used to study the evolution of mass, energy and structure in the Universe over the past few billion years. Neutron Star Jet

An artist’s impression of the strong magnetic field neutron star in Swift J0243.6+6124 launching a jet. During the bright outburst event in which it was first discovered, the neutron star in Swift J0243.6+6124 was accreting at a very high rate, producing copious X-ray emission from the inner parts of the accretion disk. At the same time, the team detected radio emission with a sensitive radio telescope, the Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array in the USA. By studying how this radio emission changed with the X-rays, we could deduce that it came from fast-moving, narrowly-focused beams of material known as jets, seen here moving away from the neutron star magnetic poles. Neutron star and magnetic field

An artist's impression of the neutron star in Swift J0243.6+6124. The neutron star has a very strong magnetic field which prevents the accretion disk from making it all the way in to the neutron star surface. Some of the gas in the disk is channelled along the magnetic field lines onto the neutron star's magnetic poles, giving rise to X-ray emission that we see as brief, regular pulses of X-rays as the star spins around once every 10 seconds. Neutron star and donor

An artist's impression of the binary system Swift J0243.6+6124. A binary system with a neutron star in a 27-day orbit and a more massive, rapidly-rotating donor star. The rapid rotation of the donor star throws off a disk of material around the stellar equator. As the neutron star passes through the disk during its orbit, it picks up some of this outflowing gas, which then spirals in towards the neutron star in an accretion disk. Smashing Galaxies

One of the most fun things that ICRAR’s simulations team get to do is smash giant galaxies together and see what happens! This picture shows two galaxies after they’ve had a close approach. Their interaction as stripped gas off the spiral shape of the galaxies, making the tadpole-like tails and shapes seen. Credit: ICRAR

Cosmic Time

This image shows the growth of the cosmic web of dark matter over the 14 billion year history of our Universe, from ripples in the early Universe (on the left) to knots, filaments and voids in the present day (on the right). This version has much smoother steps through time to remove the bands if you prefer not to see the time steps. Created using a supercomputer, this image is made using a series of stills from an incredible movie that shows how the entire Universe probably came to look like it does today. Credit: ICRAR

X-Ray Glasses - Space Edition

Ever wondered what space would look like if you had X-ray vision? A little something like this! This is a simulation of an energetic galaxy showing the powerful X-rays emitted by the gas floating within it. You can see bubbles in the gas created by powerful stellar winds or supernovae – exploding stars! Credit: ICRAR.
